build sshguard from source

get rid of previously installed package

apt purge sshguard
rm -rf /etc/sshguard

requirements

apt install bison flex

grab the latest release

    rel=2.4.2

    wget https://sourceforge.net/projects/sshguard/files/sshguard/$rel/sshguard-$rel.tar.gz
    wget https://sourceforge.net/projects/sshguard/files/sshguard/$rel/sshguard-$rel.sha256

    gpg --keyserver ... --recv-key 3A236330
    gpg --verify sshguard-$rel.sha256

    grep ^SHA256 sshguard-$rel.sha256
    sha256sum sshguard-$rel.tar.gz

tar xzf sshguard-$rel.tar.gz
cd sshguard-$rel/

and start from scratch

./configure --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var
echo $MAKEFLAGS
make
make install

finish-up deployment manually

    cp -i examples/sshguard.conf.sample /etc/sshguard.conf
    mkdir /var/lib/sshguard/ # enemies file does not require specific ownership
    ls -lF /usr/local/libexec/sshg-fw-nft-sets

cat examples/whitelistfile.example
